Hi there leapers .

It’s always great to see Springleap designers getting their name out there and making the South African design industry proud!

Recently Greg Darroll , aka: Tokyo_GoGo , held an exhibition of his supreme work with another up-and-coming designer, Skullboy .

Both of these Durban boys rocked the crowd with their unique and undeniably professional style .
There is no doubt that their work is both of an international quality!

Tokyo_GoGo has really been pushing lately and the results are obvious . Not only is this exhibition getting him some well deserved attention , but he was also selected as a RVCA ANP artist.

The Home Sweet Homies exhibition began on 26 May and will run for 2 weeks.
That means you still have time to pull into Gallery 415 on Umgeni Road and check out their designs.
It was really shweet to see a few past Springleap designs that he added to his exhibition.

Look in the above image, do you see any that look familiar? I do!!!!
I spy with my little eye, CropPixels , PoolTable , Ducks in a Row , SpeedTrap , Rest in Pixels and Russian Dolls are Sneaky .

All of these designs are sooo mega-classic . I hope that the crowds appreciated this top notch t-shirt design .

If you are in Durban you must definitely try and make time to get across to Home Sweet Homies .
You will not be disappointed…that much is certain!

Well done Greg! Will there be any plans for Home Sweet Homies to make its way down to Cape Town?

Greetings all.

A few days ago I wrote a posting on the very educational CTFC event , which Catherine and I attended. Johan Kraus gave a very insightful talk about summer 2011 trends that we would expect to see in Foshini and across the globe .

One of the trends which I am looking forward to is that of the Road Trip theme.

Think 1950’s America , the family all bundled in the car with a picnic basket , mom with huge shades and relaxed swing dress .
You could expect to see gingham style tops making an appearance as well as a whole array of the before-mentioned 1950’s style swing dresses with soft fabrics and a bit of a flare .

Lena Hoschek heads the charge with her beautiful swing dresses. All of them fit the theme perfectly and truly have such a great balance of color and texture . In my humble ‘guy opinion’ I think these dresses are mightily attractive and I will definitely be taking my lady to Foshini to see what they have on offer for the coming season.

Hilfiger has also jumped on this particular wagon, but by using a more nautical sensibility with well balanced stripes . We can also expect to see more and more stripes as we build towards the season and eventually becoming a full on print direction .

Bear in mind that there was a Road Trip theme last year (2010) which included the tea dress style, as well as, suede ankle boots , skinny belts and the unmistakably 50’s headscarves .

I’d imagine that this style worked out pretty well , which is why it will see a resurgence, unlike the failed 80’s theme from last year.

The next trend that I have to share with you is the Garden Party theme.
This style will see an explosion of ultra-feminine sundresses!

Alberta Ferreti has put together a collection that is in a word ‘ethereal’.

Ferretti’s sophisticated vintage floral is undoubtedly my favorite of the Garden Party theme that Johan had to show us.

While Ferretti focussed on vintage florals, Etro decided to go for a more ethnic print direction with sexy fitted knit and maxi dresses all making an appearance.

The maxi seems to be a style that is finding very good footing these days. Great for ladies of any shape and size! While it has a flattering effect it still looks mega-hot on the skinnier tall build.
Any way you look at it vintage inspired maxis are going to be huge…so go get one!

Next time I will take a look at the incomparable LWD ….and no, that middle letter is NOT a B!

I think this one was my favourite from the presentation. Just hope they make maxi’s for the vertically challenged so that one doesn’t end up with a frock dragging on the ground! The textile patterning makes great design inspiration.

Just another celebrity fashion label?

David Arquette of Scream fame has teamed up with well renowned musician, Ben Harper , to create their own clothing line of urban sleek design.

I was watching a few videos of these guys as they chat about their new endeavor and they really seem a bit all-over-the-place .
It seem that the 3 founders don’t get too heavily involved in the actual designing of these garments. They select cuts and colors and recreate vintage pieces….hmmmm, so sounds a bit scary.

Arquette recently did a new tee for their line which is now being sold exclusively on xojane.com
This is a limited edition tee… thank goodness!
I say this because it is one of the lamest t-shirt designs I have seen in ages.
Our Springleapers would shake their heads if it ever made its way onto our vote section.

You can see in the main blog image just how *simplistic the tee actually is.
Not to mention the message “I love therefore I am”, which by the way is not original and I have seen on tee designs in the past.

Is this another example of a t-shirt being ‘cool’ simply because it was designed by somebody famous?
I weep at simple cruddy slogan designs like this!

Now perhaps it’s just the level of talent that I am used to on our site which makes me recoil from such a design, but I’m wondering what
kind of person would wear this tee?

Luckily it’s not all doom and gloom . In one of their videos I saw some really nice chilled ladies wear , which I can see taking off.
However, these dudes need some serious help with their t-shirts….and their logo, which is rather shikaka.

Here’s wishing them luck in their venture. Let’s hope their passion for clothing extends beyond a simple ‘flight of fancy’ which will peter our when they both land opportunities in their professions of choice.
Will they just hand over the design and creativity to a team of professional and simply be the ‘face’ of the brand?

They seem like a mellow bunch of guys, so let’s see what they can deliver.

Halftone t-shirt design has really become popular over the past few years.
So much so, that it’s a standard arrow in many artists ‘design quivers’ and is indispensable when submitting to competitions such as ours.

Look there are plenty of design styles for adding depth to t-shirt designs, but halftones are arguably the easiest of the lot to master and implement, in a variety of design, in a short space of time.

Springleap.com is not a stranger to halftone t-shirt design in their submissions.
Many of our now classic tees all make great use of this versatile design element.

Astroschool by Kingslip and My Friends by Jott are great examples of using halftones as a way to give your tee designs interesting shading techniques .
Look how Astroschool uses layered halftones to create irregular shading. This is what sold me on this design originally. My Friends Gorillazesque style is given extra flava by using a neat halftone shadow, it takes a normal design and instantly transforms it into a contender .

Apocalyptic Sunset by Suburbanhijinx and Cash’s Spring Bottle are both fine examples of boosting the awesomeness of your design by using halftones as a background . While Apocalyptic Sunset uses heavy color to enhance the negative space of the characters on the tee, Spring Bottle uses a faded halftone background simply to give it’s already muted design a background to bring out the focus elements…what better than using the sunshine!

Whether you love it or hate it the humble halftone is here to stay!
What are your thought, do you feel that halftones are the way to go, are an easy alternative to other methods, or just plain kaka….yes I said it KAKA :P
