One of the reasons I love Springleap is that I’m allowed to be so locally relevant here with my thoughts. While the rest of the world might wonder what the heck this image means, we all have heard the story of the man who’s the father of the nation , right? Yep I know, it’s another Vader design, but hey I bet you never saw THIS joke before :)

PayPal in South Africa - FNB official story shoutOut 1 week, 1 day ago by EranEyal in peeps | 8 hours, 48 minutes ago by TheTank |

WHAT??!! You don’t know what PayPal is? I don’t blame you, since the South African e-commerce environment has been hamstrung by not having this worldwide international standard stripped from us for so long. PayPal is a USA-based wallet system for making and receiving payments safely over the Internet. PayPal protects you most of all as at no time do you need to divulge any of your financial information. FANTASTIC! PayPal became especially famous on eBay and has now become *THE standard * in online payments. Today PayPal has more than 153 million accounts worldwide across 190 markets and 24 currencies. A few years ago due to some decisions made by the reserve bank as well as increased rate in fraud. But the genera consensus is that’s all a bit of “he said, she said”. A bit of online digging revealed the following article on one of South Africa’s best known blogs, mybroadband - It’s a common consensus that something does stink to high heaven here. Here is another article on MoneyWeb siting the exact legislation. Here is a good podcast covering the issue with JP van der Spuy from Mytrade.co.za
Th two major considerations that have really held back e-commerce in South Africa are the South African Postal Service (So bad it sent the world’s largest shopping portal Amazon.com) running for the purple mountains) coupled with the lack of PayPal. I know that the lift of this ridiculous restriction will completely change the way that companies like Springleap.com will do business not only in South Africa, but with the international Internet community that has become used to PayPal as their go-to payment method. Despite what you may have heard to date the deal has not yet been sealed, but yesterday Virginia Magapatona - the head of corporate communications at FNB - confirmed that FNB is indeed in discussions with PayPal and the South African Reserve Bank - but that’s where the information and communication trail ends. That’s the FNB official story. Te rest is hype and conjecture. And hope.

Springleap is excited to announce the launch of a new partnership in conjunction with African Cream Records ! Springleap African Cream will be targeted specifically at curio/tourist stores across South Africa. To celebrate we are holding a very special competition to find one OR MORE designs that will enter the collection. Yup, you could see your design in stores across South Africa and worn by tourists from all over the world. What makes South Africa special? Uniting us in our hearts and minds? Is it the geography, the seas, the mountains, the cities? Or is it the culture, the history… the PEOPLE ? This competition is a tribute to the HEROES that fought to overcome adversity and contributed to South Africa being the amazing country it is today. People like Nelson Mandela, Steve Biko, Chris Hani, Miriam Makeba, Lucky Dube, Brenda Fassie to name a few; people whose passion for this great nation transformed it. Nelson Mandela once said “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.” Open up your heart and challenge yourself to take inspiration from these trailblazers to design a t-shirt that presents their faces in a new light and allows their legend to live on. Share your vision. Use your creative talents to help us see their faces through your hearts and eyes. Some basic rules: No photos or edited photos. Only self-created designs will be considered. We are looking for designs done from scratch with great design flair; designs that aren’t the standard fare of a printed face pasted on a shirt. Originality, creativity and ingenuity are the name of the day, but remember, you should still be able to clearly recognize the person depicted. Parodies, caricatures, collages, sketches are all fair game. Dates to diarise: Submissions for designs open: 21 January 2021 Submissions for designs close: 23 February 2021 Voting starts: 25 February 2021 Voting ends: 11 March 2021 Winner is announced: 11 March 2021 Looking for inspiration? Here are some excellent examples: Check out these great portrayals of Obama: I hope these examples have got your creative juices flowing! What’s up for grabs??? For the WINNER: R4000 (US$500) HOWEVER, ALL ENTRIES will be submitted to our client. The designer of any entry that is selected for print will receive a cool R1500!! It could be one person, but it could be 20!! FAME! You could see your designs in tourist stores right across South Africa In order to get started on your designs download the Springleap t-shirt Submission Kit and get started right away! I was going for a optical illusion type thing, but with a spooky atmosphere (kind of Tim Burton). Just out of interest “Shadowplay” is the title of a Joy Division track.

The sheepskin boots of UGG Australia have unquestionably come a long way. Starting from the shepherds of the country, the boots were supercharged to popularity when they were practiced by war pilots in World War II. These pilots were depending for footwear that could provide them passion and comfort during their high-altitude flights, and they observed it in the Uggs. |

I’m BACK...and with another monster! Anyway, as opposed to many of my previous random, simplified design, I decided to put a little more thought into this one. Here we have the timber monster, cutting trees, unhappy doing what he does, and “dropping off timber” after he’s done. Inspiration behind this design…as embarrassing as it is to say, there’s this one line in the movie ‘The House Bunny’ where the one character says “Excuse me. Do you know where the crapper is? I need to drop off some timber!” Made me LOL :) |

OKOKOK! So EVERYBODY knows about the sensation that has swept the South African Nation : Die Antwoord aka Zef Side So who are these super crazy ninja cats who have captured the hearts and minds of everyone - from the average Joe to the media mogul? Let’s take a quick gander at what Die Antwoord are telling people on video about their group and music and then get down to the crunch. Here’s an interview with them… not for the fainthearted though - language is a bit harsh ;) Be warned! Woo! Well - you can get a good intro from the above, but check out Die Antwoord Website - Taking over the Interweb to get a bit of a deeper gander into this insane expression of South African culture parody. Basically, the team “Zef Side” consists of Waddy (Watkin Tudor Jones) (Now calling himself Ninja) aka Max Normal of the Max Normal music group and Max Normal TV, his wife Yolandi Visser (Now Yo-landie Vi$$er) and DJ Hi-Tek. What a … special… bunch they are ;P Max - or Ninja - has amazing commitment to the role and we applaud him - those tat’s are real by the way - a more recent addition for the role of Ninja. They really have accomplished what most ad agencies have been THROWING money at for ages : the purposeful intention and complishment of taking their product VIRAL. This was the first video of theirs I saw which had me rolling on the floor in tears I present you with Die Antwoord : Zef Side NOTE THAT THE VIDEO HAS ENJOYED ALMOST 700 000 VIEWS ON YOUTUBE!!! WOW! So what’s their “official” story on the video about Die Antwoord’s music? Well - Ninja has “Mad Gangsta Skeels”, his buddy DJ Hi-Tek has a PC Computer and produces next level beats and his gal Yo-Landi Vi$$er lives … she’s the next door neighbour across the road. And they have known each other for “ The whole time, since forever. A very long time… for very long.” What is it about Die Antwoord that has made them so much a part of our lives? Is it the classic little dorp they live in with the white ou wine-ous with their missing teeth drinking black label? Is it Ninja’s out-of-control Pink-Floyd boxer pants and dancing wanger? :P Perhaps it’s the SUPERLATIVE production quality of their videos which are graphically flipping awesome… It’s all of these… and more. They have captured parody elements of South African culture we have all come into contact with at some stage or another. Here’s another of their classic music videos that has blown the minds of the public : ENTER The NINJA Today I discovered that this video has had over 1.1 MILLION VIEWS on YouTube… The jaw… hits the floor. Well done guys - MAXIMUM SPRINGLEAP RESPECT. The above video depicts Ninja and his zany crew in a bit of a different light. My business partner Paul Simon (founder of YDE - Young Designers Emporium) simply said : “these guys have done it. He’s the new Eminem” - a steep compliment from the man himself. What do Zef Side have to say about what Die Antwoord means? “the answer.” The Answer to What? “whatever, man.” Without too much further discussions of Die Antwoord, their videos and music or the INCREDIBLE accomplishment they have achieved… here’s pretty much a full collection of their videos we could find thus far. ENJOY - by the looks of it Ninja and his crew are...
Recently a very cool Cape Town based blog TaxiJam had the chance to interview Ninja, Yolandi and DJ Hi-Tek in the back of a South African Taxi. (Watch out - lyrics are a bit hectik!) - Check out the full interview at TaxiJam website. Taxijam presents Die Antwoord from taxijam on Vimeo. So! Did I leave anything out - any videos I have forgotten about? Pitch in and add yours!
