Top 6 movie posters of 2011 shoutOut 2 days, 15 hours ago by Duncan Boxshall-Smith in peeps |

If there is one thing I love more than design, its movies!
Creating aesthetically impressive movie posters that captivate the public is one of the key factors in drawing people to a movie. It’s all marketing really! First up we have the Green Hornet. This remake, made famous by Bruce Lee, was highly anticipated by fans of the original series as well as ‘Lee Acolytes’. Unfortunately the movie was weak at best and picked one of the worst possible actors possible for the role of the Green Hornet, Seth Rogen (he was also one of the writers…sigh). Luckily the movie poster was insanely cool and was both dark and enticingly hardcore. Great angle and the way the Green Hornet logo is created by the headlights is also super slick. Limitless was one of 2011’s most inventive and exciting flicks. Not only did Neil Burger do a superb job of directing, but Bradley Cooper also knocked the leading role out of the park! The movie poster is a vibrant sectioned design which captures the fast paced high-rolling lifestyle of the protagonist and exudes his ‘limitless’ potential. Grungy, heavy and riddled with action! Suckerpunch was one of those movies that was awesome, but which could have been so much better, huge potential and probably my best movie soundtrack of 2011. It is easy to see why the younger male demographic they were targeting would find it difficult not to stare at this movie poster. The amalgamation of mecha, dragons and weapon wielding hotties is definitely attractive. The Super 8 movie poster instantly grabbed my attention because of the irregular perspective of the silhouetted landscape. When I first saw the poster from a distance I didn’t even see the town and the people, it actually looked like some weird dark cloudy planet with a hazy white atmosphere. Can you see what I mean? This really used negative space to maximum effect. Nice flick, rocking movie poster….great job ;) Fast Five – not really my kinda movie, def one for gear heads and people who enjoy a bit of mindless action! On the flip-side their movie poster was damn cool. The oppressively atmosphere really sets it apart from the posters of the previous movies. The way it looks like they are driving into darkness/danger is a nice touch. The rippling neon streaks and blurs are indispensible with conveying the sense of speed! Well put together and visually explosive
My final choice is also my favourite movie poster of 2011, Captain America. The movie was loads of fun and set a great tone for the upcoming Avengers movie…which is going to be crazy amazing!!! There have already been a barrage of amazing movie posters in 2012 and we are not even half-way through. My favourite movie poster for 2012 thus far is undoubtedly for Prometheus…which is also likely to be my favourite movie of the year as well.
What were your favourite movie posters of 2011? |

If you live here in sunny South Africa, chances are you have seen the Clover ‘Way Better’ commercial on the telly. Really, it is something special to behold!
These days everybody seems to be using digital animation to express their brand.
If you thought the TV advert was cool just wait until you take a look at Clovers website dedicated to the magic of Way Better universe. This amazingly intricate site lets you travel to the distant Milky Way where all of Clovers yummy products are made by quirky creatures and charismatic characters!
While the Way Better campaign may seem like it is geared towards kids, which it is to some degree, I feel that it still appeals to a broad demographic. This kind of rollercoaster of fantasy and creativity appeals to the child in all of us and takes us back to the days when we believed all manner of wild tales and accepted the existence of magic without question!
Any way you look at it, this is simply spectacular work! |

Springleap has teamed up with Stimorol South Africa to bring you our very first refreshing packaging design contest! This will be the first time that designers on our platform will have the chance to get involved in creating a whole new identity for a much loved well known brand. Stimorol is the original long lasting gum that is as exciting and full of energy as its millions of fans all around the globe. We are looking for equally vibrant designers to truly capture the essence of this quirky and forward-thinking brand by tapping into their own boundless creativity. The packaging design for this energetic brand needs to reflect directly with the people who love it. Stimorol is for people on the go - those who have a passion to achieve and who really want to have fun. Stimorol fans are the type of people who are always networking, spreading the word and staying connected…no matter what. This is the perfect chance for designers to get involved in a contest with a difference and to help create something that will transform this epic brand as it blasts-off on the next leg of its journey. Time to innovate, collaborate and bring every bit of your ‘creative power’ to the party! Do you have what it takes to rejuvenate the branding of the Number 1 Chewing Gum brand in South Africa?
YOUR MISSION: Stimorol wants you to revitalize the packaging of their 6 ‘core’ stick gums, which includes the Air Rush range. Designers must create a fresh packaging design, which clearly illustrates the local vibe as well as the brand’s energy. Your designs must have a funky retro edge, which is also refined, sustainable, timeless and executed in an uncomplicated manner.
THE BRIEF:
Designers need to sustainably rejuvenate the Stimorol brand by creating a refreshing, relevant and timelessnew packaging design. We are looking for packaging design, which is retro and classic, but must still be fun, innovative and ‘out there’ in a simple and effective manner. Remember that this is not simply about designing chewing gum packaging - you are also marketing the energetic lifestyle of the Stimorol consumer. These are the ‘out of the ordinary’ people who bring color and excitement to our world and who raise our spirits simply by being around them. Designers will need to re-create Stimorol’s 6 stick pack variants – Original, Musk, Wild Cherry, Spearmint, Air Rush Wicks Mint and Air Rush Menthol. Designers must take into consideration the holistic brand and packaging appearance as it will appear on the shelf – i.e. what the new packaging will look like when the individual sticks lay side by side on the shelf in their display box. Think holistically - how can you design your packs so that each one stands out uniquely from the others.

South Africa is a vibrant country that captivates people from all over the world.
Our unique flora and fauna, colourful culture and awe-inspiring artwork, draws thousands of people to our shores every year!
However, there is some good news for those who would like to take a closer look at the fascinating artwork of ancient South African cultures. Google Art Project is now using its powerful Street View technology to give anybody with an internet connection the ability to take virtual tours of the world’s greatest galleries….this now includes amazing rock art, as well as contemporary artwork from South Africa’s best artists. You can call up gorgeous high resolution images by simply clicking on a smaller gallery image. Some of the images have also been uploaded in what is called “gigapixel resolution”, which is many times better than what your run-of-the-mill digital camera. It’s aaaalmost as if you were actually there! It is very impressive how quickly Art Project has expanded. When it first began it had only a handful of super popular galleries, but has since become involved with over 150 partners in 40 countries….WOW!
Big congrats to both the Iziko National gallery and the Rock Art research institute at Wits University for becoming part of a select list of world famous museums and art institute’s! This exciting new platform will undoubtedly help to cast the spotlight on South African artists and introduce the world to our vast cache of talent. |

Easter Packaging design - inspiration shoutOut 1 week, 4 days ago by DuncanBoxie in peeps |

Happy Easter one and all! Yep it’s that time of year again – time for good natured bunnies to disperse yummy multi-coloured chocolate eggs throughout the gardens of the world. As many of you will know we are currently running our very first packaging design contest for Stimorol. So, I thought it would be cool to stick with the Easter vibe, but still share some packaging design inspiration to help our designers with their concepts.
The first design comes from a company called Moo Free, which makes a dairy free milk chocolate alternative Easter Egg. I really love the way this was put together. It has a minimally executed illustration, which suits the fact that the product is milk free and has a healthy vibe to it. The cute little bunny and daisies work well set against the relatively large background colour. This kind of concept could really be a smart approach for designers who are looking for a design that is uncluttered and clean.
The next design I want to show you is a Traidcraft Easter Egg that has a nice clear aesthetic. Usually I don’t like it when packaging design couples clean illustration with full colour photographic elements, because they often clash too much. However, strangely I don’t mind how this turned out! Foiled wrapped chocolate bunnies have been a family favourite for many years! When I was a kid I loved the characters so much that I didn’t even want to eat them, hehe. These days companies go above and beyond to create simply amazing chocolate bunny designs. While this kind of packaging design is quite different from the wrapper style of Stimorol chewing gum, I still feel that they can inspire designers to effectively use shape and colour. This type of design allows a designer to use the full power of character design to their advantage.
I hope that these examples of Easter packaging design have helped inspire your design concepts.
The Springleap team wishes all of our members that are celebrating Easter a very happy holiday! |

Early Rider - cool kids bikes shoutOut 1 week, 5 days ago by Duncan Boxshall-Smith in peeps |

Kids are zooming around in style! The Early Rider bike range is so much more than what you have come to expect from traditional kids bikes. The company was started back in 2006 by Andy Loveland, who became obsessed with providing his young son with a suitable riding bike that also looked really awesome. In the end he devised an amazing looking bike that was not only eco-friendly, but also completely 'adjustable'.
Early Rider is based in the UK, but their bikes are readily available in South Africa. I wish I had one of these bikes when I was younger. They are so slick and have plenty of attitude….which is something I didn’t think I would ever say about a product created for children. The low saddle seat is something I truly appreciate, because it allows even the shortest lil dudes to have a safer experience and use their legs properly! Also another cool feature is the fact that the handle bars can lie flat in the event of a crash. This means your child is safe from being impaled on the handle bars. Honestly I can’t even count how many times this sucky situation as happened to me in the past…ouch!
Not only are their bikes aesthetically stunning and made from environmentally friendly materials, but they are also supremely durable and are made to take a good knock!
If you would like to find out more about these super cool kids bikes, please surf across to the Early Rider page or alternatively scope out their Facebook page. Time to get your kids out there and teach them a seriously valuable skill. Lets riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiide!
