Our Crowdsourcing Designer Report interviews here on Springleap give us an opportunity to dig deep and get feedback from designers and illustrators from around the world on their experience of crowdsourced design platforms. We shoot them some questions, they respond, and you get the lowdown - everyone wins! In today's interview, we put the spotlight on one of the most prolific and highly-awarded designers in the crowdsource game - the legendary Sebasebi! Who are you? I'm Sebastian Govino Where do you live? I live in Rosario, Argentina Describe yourself - likes/ dislikes. Well... I like anything that involves a creative process, painting, digital design, some woodworking as a hobby, play trumpet and sailing (we have a fantastic river here in Rosario). And soccer! Of course. I love the outdoor life - I don’t like the city life, and try to stay away from "chaos". In big cities there's no respect for others.
Which crowdsource platforms do you use? I use DBH, Threadless, La Fraise, Pampling and Springleap of course. How did you hear about them? Some years ago I produced clothes, and looking for inspiration, I found these sites, and slowly began to produce designs, which is what I really like. What do you love about crowdsourcing contests / what don't you? I love the concept of putting a work of art on a shirt. I think if you can carry thousands of songs or books in your bags, why not wear a work of art on a shirt? Many people have the opportunity to have a "painting" on a shirt now - art is not only exhibited in a gallery.
Has it become a sustainable source of income? Sometimes it is more difficult, but generally, yes. What inspires you? Ecology, the innocence of the children - they do all magic! Music, the universe... Describe your design style? It’s difficult - I like surrealism, a lot. But... I don’t know... What design tools / software do you use? Everything always starts the same way: with a pencil and paper, then afterward I use Photoshop and Illustrator. Did you study design? No, I didn’t. Which are your favorite designers and styles? I like the style of Robson Borges, Radiomode, Vcalahan, and many more... and the style of Matihole.
What category of projects are your favorites? (e.g: packaging) Shirts, always. What has been your favorite brief so far? Mmmm...I have none in particular.
There it is ladies and gents - some insights from one of the biggest names in crowdsource design, and a longstanding favourite here on Springleap. Thanks for reading - and thanks to Sebasebi for the interview!

PIMPED AT LAST! The designs were amazing, the votes flooded in and the final selection has been made – yes, it’s true – the three winners of our Nokia ‘Pimp Our Devs’ contest have been chosen!
Massive congratulations go out to nicetomeetyou, for his epic design, Behind The Scenes! It's an awesome design that brings to mind the stealthy ninja skills that Nokia’s devs have, and how their work goes on behind the scenes but makes all the difference to the user experience for Nokia users! It's a design that makes smart reference to the user interface and creates a real sense of creativity through the use of the ninjas - we love it! Runner up at second place was The Light Imagination by one of our rock steady designers, dephedwiputra! This is another in a long line of great designs submitted by our man from Indonesia, and it shows - it's a positively psychedelic vortex that describes the world of possibility a Lumia offers!
Bringing up the rear is our third placed design, Digital Wizard 3, by another of our longstanding submissions champs, kharmazero! Once again it's a characteristically sublime design from our man in France which communicates a great sense of mystery and wizardry, not unlike the world of the developers the design was created for!
Over the past few weeks we've seen a massive number of entries and some seriously fantastic designs! A big shout goes out to all those designers who took the time to participate and submit; it's been a great exercise in seeing how much interest our contests generate from designers all over the world and we’ve seen some incredible work, so THANK YOU TO ALL WHO ENTERED! We look forward to seeing you rise to the challenge of our next branded design contest! |

Embedded social media competitionsFor years brands and agencies have wanted to run design contests and challenges in their own pages to access design crowdsourcing and the unique social media experience that user-generated content and engagement provides. The problem: brands and agencies don't have a powerful design community and supporters ready to go and who have been rewarded over time nor the know-how of how to mobilize, maintain and administer the process. That's a lot of pain! It also means a lot of development - which is really expensive. So, at Springleap we've come up with the ultimate solution: our awesome design contests... in your Facebook page! WHITELABELLED!Not only can you easily customize the entire experience to your brand CI (Corporate Image) colours and insert your brand messages, banners and logos - you can run the contest in as many Facebook fan pages as you like! No matter where the designs are entered or where the fan engagement happens - it all appears instantaneously in all the different Facebook fan pages! This means that the amazing designs from the Springleap community appear in your competition on your Facebook page to set the tone for high-quality content and engagement. Here's an example of an embedded brief page below:
1. Design competition with your corporate image look and feel 2. Total customization of the design competition template elements - even the buttons! 3. Your banners - easy upload. 4. Customized sharing tools to send your design contest VIRAL. You get your own brief, submit, vote and profile pages. Best of all - there's no development necessary and you're up and running in no time whatsoever. Here's an example of a vote page:
So you get the whole social media experience - in your Facebook page to engage your brand fans where they belong... but with the awesome Springleap community talent... and you can run it in partner and blogger pages simultaneously to increase your reach. Crowdsourcing Designer Interview #7
In each of our Crowdsourcing Designer Report interviews here on Springleap, we dig deep to get the feedback from designers and illustrators from around the world on their experience of crowdsourced design platforms. We shoot them some questions, they respond, and you get the lowdown - everyone wins! In today's interview, we have the pleasure of interviewing Canadian illustrator Kirsten McCrae, who has a penchant for pop culture, politics and patterns!
Who are you? I'm Kirsten McCrea, an artist and the Founder and Director of Papirmasse, an affordable art subscription. Where do you live?
Between Toronto and Montreal, Canada.
Describe yourself - likes/ dislikes.
I love playing with the cross between popular and underground culture / patterning / politics / going out to see art shows. I dislike art that looks like an advertisement minus the product.
Which platforms do you use?
Threadless, Mintees, and Infectious.
How did you hear about them?
You don't have to travel far on the internet to learn about most of the above. In the case of Infectious, they contacted me after seeing my work on Artist A Day.
What do you love about crowdsourcing contests/ what don't you?
I am continually surprised by the sophisticated design taste of the public. I would say that generally, with crowdsourced design contests, the best stuff rises to the top.
Has it become a sustainable source of income?
No, I think that most successful artists rely on multiple sources of income. In my case, I was putting a lot of effort into it but eventually better opportunities came along from repeat clients. I now rarely submit to these types of websites, though I wouldn't be surprised if I started to again at some point in the future.
What inspires you?
Working alongside other talented artists in the collective En Masse. My brilliant husband Jp King of Paper Pusher. Independent publishing. Parties.
Describe your design style?
A patterned and ornamental balance between extreme chaos and restrained tight lines.
Where did you study design?
I studied Fine Art (painting and drawing) at Concordia University in Montreal.
Which are your favorite designers and styles?
I think Sagmeister is everyone's favourite these days, so I will try to be less predictable and pick Stephen Heller and Jessica Hische.
What category of projects are your favorites? (e.g: packaging)
Gig posters and apparel.
What has been your favorite brief so far?
Every favourite brief is the one that says "Just do your thing. We trust you."
How can the experience be improved? For everything in general, the more people involved, the better.
Thanks to Kirsten for her time and insights!

In each of our Crowdsourcing Designer Report interviews here on Springleap, we dig deep to get the feedback from designers and illustrators from around the world on their experience of crowdsourced design platforms. We shoot them some questions, they respond, and you get the lowdown - everyone wins. In today's interview, we have the pleasure of interviewing British illustrator Clare Nicholas, who produces illustrations for editorial and digital creations with a printmaking influence in a fresh contemporary style.
Who are you?
I am Clare Nicholas, illustrator.
Where do you live?
I live in Rugby, Warwickshire, UK.
Describe yourself - likes/ dislikes.
I like anything creative, walking in the mountains.
Which crowdsource plaforms do you use?
I use Design Crowd which I discovered online somehow.
What do you love about crowdsourcing contests?
I love the fact that you have the opportunity to compete for a project when it is quiet on the commissioning front. It keeps my mind focused on creating and gives me a good idea of what is going on. I don't like that fact that so far I have been unsuccessful but I am forever hopeful. I have only been trying for the last few weeks.
What don't you love about crowdsourcing contests?
It has not evolved into a source of income for me yet.
What inspires you?
Nature inspires me. It is such a great resource and abundantly available.
Describe your design style?
My design style can be quirky and fun.
Where did you study design?
I studied art at Bristol Polytechnic and at the Royal College of Art in London, UK.
Which are your favorite designers and styles?
I am influenced by lots of things. Folk art is a great love of mine. I adore Rob Ryan's work. And I also like contemporary montage styles, Michelle Thompson being one example.
What category of projects are your favorites? (e.g: packaging)
I love packaging and greetings design but tend to do a lot of editorial work.
What has been your favourite brief so far?
My favourite brief was working on a set of commissioned images for a hotel in Stratford Upon Avon, UK. The series was based losely around the themes of the swan (the hotel's name) and Shakespeare - Stratford Upon Avon was William Shakespeare's birthplace.
How can the experience be improved?
I think crowdsourcing could be improved by increased feedback from the potential client. It's quite hard to have no response at all even when you have committed a significant amount and time and effort.
Thanks to Clare for the time and insights into her experience of crowdsourced design! If you'd like to see more of her work, take a look here.

In our Crowdsourcing Designer Report, we dig deep to get the feedback from designers and illustrators from around the world on their experience of crowdsourced design. We shoot them some questions, they respond, and you get the lowdown - everyone wins. In today's interview, San Francisco designer Andy Pitts! Who are you? Andy Pitts! Where do you live? San Francisco, CA Describe yourself - likes / dislikes. A tall lanky guy with an awful memory and a mellow/motivated personality. I'm a big fan of beer, coffee, skateboarding, art, drowning in side-projects, my dog Pants and my wife Ashley.
What inspires you? I get inspired by absorbing all the things around me and then mushing them into something different. I love taking things out of context and seeing things from a different perspective or a new light. What design tools do you use (ie: Photoshop, Wacom etc)? Illustrator and Photoshop, (with a Wacom tablet), a Moleskin for doodles and notes, paint for making messes - gallons of paint for making really big messes! Describe your design style? My design style varies based on the project at hand - at work it will be very different than if I'm working on a specific tee contest or painting or piece of art. Style helps communicate the message - so it depends on what I'm saying and how it needs to be said. Where did you study design? Self-taught! The Internet is a wealth of information.
Which are your favorite designers and styles? No die-hard favorites, it really depends on the mood I'm in - or what mood a design puts me in. What category of projects are your favorites? (e.g: packaging) Always t-shirts - but I also love skateboard art, silkscreened prints and traditional paint on canvas. Which design platforms do you use (eg: Threadless, 99designs etc)? For the sake of free time now I've slimmed my contest entries down to just Threadless - but I do shop designs around to other sites if I feel I have something that will work specifically for them.
What do you love about crowdsourcing contests/ what don't you? I love that you follow any idea you have and present it to the world - no one to answer to but your self for direction. Through crowdsourcing contests I've learned how to keep and grow from valuable input, and how to forget and ignore negativity. Important lessons when you are putting your designs on display for the world to judge Has it become a sustainable source of income? It's definitely a nice chunk of side income! Last word from Andy: Thanks to everyone who digs my stuff! Feel free to say hi or give a shout:

What design tools do you use (ie: Photoshop, Wacom etc)?
In creating artwork, I use paper, pencil, Photoshop and Wacom. Crowdsourcing Designer Interviews #1 - Kristian Jabilles (aka waste factory)
In our Crowdsourcing Designer Report, we interview designers and illustrators from around the world and shoot them some questions on their experience of the platform. First up, is Kristian Jabilles.
Who are you?
I'm Kristian Jabilles (a.k.a : waste factory)
Where do you live?
I'm from the Philippines.
Which platforms do you use?
I usually use Photoshop, Illustrator and a Wacom tablet, but sometimes i use my iPad, so that i can draw anytime, anywhere and transfer them in Photoshop after.
How did you hear about them?
I heard about them from my friends, cause I always create and draw artwork on my free time, so they told me to try and join.
What do you love about crowdsourcing contests/ what don't you?
What I love about crowdsourcing is exposure, and since you are showing off your art from the people and fellow artists, it is really good to get suggestions and comments from them, and that can help on improving my next and future designs, and also we can watch other artist's work and learn from them.
Has it become a sustainable source of income?
It sure is, It's really good when we artist just making some designs as a hobby and after the hard work of making it, comes the prize.
What inspires you?
Everything around me keeps me inspired: people, loved ones, fellow artist's works and music.
Describe your design style?
I really love to create subtle and detailed artwork but with deep meaning in it.
Where did you study design?
I did not, I just love to draw and create designs using a pencil and paper, so I installed Photoshop and Illustrator and started reading tutorials from the web on how to use it.
Which are your favorite designers and styles?
There are a lot of great designers out there, but the artists that mostly inpsired me are:
Spykee
Dandingeroz
Nicebleed
Ntudio8worx
iamrobman
Wotto
Robson Borges
Alex Solis
How can the experience be improved?
I think it can be improved by exposing artist printed works, like for example, your most printed artist, you can add a page which shows your most printed artists and each artist got some like a shop page which will display all his/her printed designs, and more prizes like a category of artists achievements, like awards, medals and more credit.
By this, this can make the artist share his/her shop page to friends and families and to the web and show off his/her credentials and all his/her printed tees in one page.. which will give exposure too to the site. Thats what I think.. :)
To see more of waste factory's work, go here.
