NIKE - Packaging Design - REBRANDING shoutOut on 16/3/12 by DuncanBoxie in wordUp |

Packaging design is paramount for any product. However, getting it right can often be a challenge especially when customers are used to seeing it a certain way! With our first ever Springleap packaging design contest on the way for Stimorol, I thought it would be a good idea to show you as many examples of effective packaging design as possible, to try and get those creative juices flowing. There are plenty of big name companies that go through this periodic change, but few pull it off with style. Back in 2010 Nike Golf decided to overhaul their golf ball packaging which they believed was in need of a sleek new approach. They were aiming to add a better sense of consistency to their range while ensuring that they ended up with an upmarket sophisticated look for retail. What they came up with was truly a packaging design rebranding success story! Nike customers complained that the packaging design of their previous range of golf balls was too different from one another and that there was general confusion in terms of a singular aesthetic direction. Take a look at this image below of the range before rebranding: Can you see what the customers meant? The various boxes and designs were certainly ‘broken up’ and it was difficult, at least at a glance, to identify all of the boxes as being Nike products. The difficulty now lay in rebranding the Nike golf balls by creating a consistent style whilst executing each sub-brands individual ‘personality’. This is what Nike did to solve the problem…with serious style I might add: They brought the range together by using an easily identifiable ‘cube shape’, which has now become synonymous with Nike Golfing. The information of the ‘horizontal name band’ that runs across the box is also a key element that helps consumers identify the Nike golf balls from a distance or amongst various other competitors. It is very impressive to see how each sub-brand in the family has been so cleverly brought together to become a cohesive entity. The previous look simply pales in comparison – amazing work! If you are looking for some inspiration on how to approach your packaging design submissions to our platform, this is the kind of example you want to emulate. |

SHOW US THE SPIRIT OF MANENTINE'S:
Manentine's Day is a special day on which we celebrate the love that a gal has for her man. It’s just like Valentine’s Day - a holiday to celebrate love & togetherness – but celebrated exactly one month later on March 14th, and focuses solely on the man in the relationship. This special day is all about showing love as seen through the eyes of men, or the love of men through the eyes of their significant other. Springleap wants to see designs that show all of the above – designs that show love, in a manly way.
ABOUT MANENTINE'S DAY:
Manentine’s Day exists thanks to Valentina (St. Valentine’s daughter) who was spoiled by her lover, Joe Manentine, each year on February 14th, and decided to repay him the love and kindness in a similar fashion exactly one month later. Joe Manentine is seen as a Saint in the eyes of many men, for leading to the creation of this day – especially for those who are fortunate enough to celebrate Manentine’s Day.
These days, Manentine’s Day is celebrated across the globe by both couples, and single men who salute their bros. Valentina’s list of Joe Manentine’s favourite things to do has been carried down through the centuries and adapted to fit contemporary male traditions. Here is the official list of “The 10 Rules For Manentine’s Day.” In the spirit of Valentina and with the help of her list, go forth, celebrate your man, let your partner celebrate you, get creative, show the love, and may you have a very Happy Manentine’s Day!
YOUR MISSION: Create a design that embodies The Spirit of Manentine’s Day. Show us the Spirit of Manentine’s Day by illustrating just how much you love your man (or for the guys – how you love to be loved!) and all the ways in which you celebrate him and show him your appreciation!
THE BRIEF:
We want to see designs that clearly embody “The Spirit of Manentine’s Day”. Show us the manly side of love, why you love him, how you praise him, and what you do on Manentine’s Day; from going to manly restaurants, doing manly activities, or getting manly gifts. If you’re a man that wants to be celebrated on Manentine’s Day – show us what your ultimate day of manly-love would be like.
Create a design that shows the following:
Designs may incorporate the official Manentine’s Day ‘Heart Tie’ logo and official colours, or be a completely new graphic, logo, or slogan. It is totally up to you! Some concept ideas to get you started on your brainstorming session:
The winning designs will clearly illustrate The Spirit of Manentine’s Day, and should be age-less and classy. They will present a positive image of the holiday. Note: Please keep it clean and wholesome. No inappropriate, rude or sexually explicit designs will be accepted.

Get ready for the manliest Springleap designs ever - it's time to reveal the winners of our The Spirit of Manentine's Day contest.
Let’s take a look at our three burly winners:
First off we congratulate our Grand Prize winner - GreboRocboy - for his cheeky submission, The Man. This design is superbly balanced, and the concept super-original hitting the theme spot on. This is a designer to definitely keep your eye on!
Second place goes to well-known Springleap design veteran, Vcalahan, who once again blew the community and judges panel away with his striking design style. His design, Love Bubble, received massive amounts of ‘vote love’ from the moment it went live on our site. Classic stuff ;)
Third place goes to a new Springleap designer who seems to have plenty of potential for branded design contests. Well done to TigerTop100!
His design, GI LOVE MY MAN, spun a clever parody of the popular GI JOE logo. This idea is totally in line with the contest theme and was put together in a clean effective manner, securing it's position as one of the top three. Kudos!
THANK YOU to all the designers who took part in this contest. We were so stoked with the amazing designs that came through. Really top-notch stuff! We hope that our winners are as ecstatic as we are and that they celebrate in style. CONGRATS!!!
Watch out for our announcement on when and where you can get your hands on these awesome tees. In the mean time - don't forget to make your plans to spoil your man on Manentine's Day taking place this Wednesday, 14 March - in case you've already forgotten ;) |

STIMOROL - 3D REVERT shoutOut on 8/3/12 by Duncan Boxshall-Smith in wordUp |

Hi there all you designers out there :D
Some of you may have already noticed that Springleap.com has launched its very first packaging design contest with mega-brand Stimorol.
The first thing you would have seen is that we require not only a thumbnail and large image of your design but also a die-line of the finished packaging. NB: The die-line must be uploaded into the ‘PACKAGING PREVIEW’! One of the most important aspect of this contest is the fact that you will need to create a 3D representation (3D revert) of your finished packaging design.
This is really easy!!!!!
Please bear in mind that in the graphic design industry the ability to ‘wrap’ designs around 3D objects, or to edit a flat design using ‘free transform’ tools is a fundamental skill. This is the perfect opportunity for designers to expand their ‘skill set’ and try something new and exciting. We cannot wait to see your packaging design ideas coming through! If you have any questions contact - Duncan [at] springleap [dot] com Happy designing! |

Hey there all you awesome Springleap designers.
We are so excited about our Spirit of Manentines Day contest, this is going to be such a fun theme to work with. Have you come up with any cool ideas yet?
Show us the Spirit of Manentine’s Day by illustrating just how much you love your man (or for the guys – how you love to be loved!) and all the ways in which you celebrate him and show him your appreciation!”
There are many guys who feel that Valentine’s Day is really just for the girls. They take their ladies out to fancy restaurants, buy flowers and even crazy expensive gifts, but what do they really get out of it? Men don’t really care about roses or boxes of chocolates, but they do love a big juicy steak or a round of golf. This is why Manentines Day is all about doing the kind of things men like to do! Here are the Top 10 Rules from the official Manentine’s Day website:
1. Plan for Your Man
This contest is pretty open to interpretation and has loads of avenues for creative concepts. Guys and girls there is obviously a ‘line’ in how far you can take your designs. Don’t make your submissions overly rude and misogynistic. We don’t mind if they are a little bit ‘naughty’, but not downright gross. We are looking for fun and quirky examples of what men want for Valentines, so please don’t be crude…after all, it’s all about the LOVE! If you would like to find out more please check out the Manentines Day official page, Facebook page, or Youtube channel. We are so excited to see your Spririt of Manentines Day designs coming through, we have no doubt you will all come up with some hilariously fun concepts.

The battle is finally over!
Every year it gets more and more difficult to choose a champion for this prestigious contest. When every single design that comes through is a potential winner it becomes tricky making a final decision. This year was no different!
However, at the end of the day it was Dina Prasetyawan (aka: kooky love) who stood tall and felled his challengers with his intense design might.
Congratulations Kooklove! You have once again really blown the Springleap team and voters away! Enjoy your prize, but remember - a year goes by quickly.... very soon you will be defending your Battle of the Best title ;)
THANK YOU to all our previous winning designers who took part and of course to everyone else who got involved by voting and commenting to help us with this very difficult decision! This was undoubtedly our best battle yet.
