Question about colour use

shoutOut 3 days, 22 hours ago by CHUCKY in peeps

I got a printing question and I thought Eran might be the right person to ask, or if anyone can help.

So here goes, IF YOU USE OPACITY OR TRANSPARENCY ON A CERTAIN LAYER DOES IT STILL COUNT AS ONE COLOUR?(THE ORIGINAL NON-TRANSPARENT COLOUR) EVEN THOUGH THERE ARE OTHER COLOURS BENEATH SHOWING THROUGH NOW.

AND IS IT PRINTABLE?

Hey Guys and Gals

@Chucky - no transparencies don’t work - you ahve to use halftones - one needs to consider that this is paint. So each color is screenprinted

Start by watching this video on screenprinting and your question on colour use will become a little easier to resolve.

Now consider that we use plastisol for most of our printing. What’s plastisol - it’s a plastic based print - pretty much the industry standard and the future of all screenprinting.

There is no real scope for transparencies here - perhpas with waterbase inks, but not with plastisol printing. Ultimately it’s like putting an acrylic paint down, letting it dry and then putting on another.

Your solution is rather to use HALF TONES.

SO WHAT ARE HALFTONES?

The above video deals with the concept to printing and how to convert a opacity or transparency to a printable halftone. The idea with halftones is that one thins the colour out into pixels spaced further apart to simulate a _thinning out effect _ of the colour.

Let’s look at @IntegralApparel’s _Ornamental, My Dear Watson”:http://www.springleap.com/designs/view/ornamental-my-dear-watson which ultimately looks like this:

See how the thinning out of the colour into pixels overlayed with other pixels of a colour below forms a new colour? Awesomeness! This is a totally new level of design.

I hope this helps to demonstrate how (on the t-shirt medium) to visually simulate opacity or transparency and resolves your question about colour use.

I think what they mean in that guide is that you can alter your opacity as long is its over a white layer. So yeah, you can get more colour options out of that one colour, but not over another colour…

It is printable though (if you have extra colours to spare), but then you might as well use the colour that the two layers create together

i was wondering the same question.if according to the design tips.pdf provided, it is clearly stated, rule no 8,
“A good way to cut down on colours is to use a percentage of another colour”.but still,im not sure if its printable.
hope someone could clear this. =)
